MateCat is a free, open-source browser-based computer-assisted translation tool developed by Translated, designed to make professional-quality translation environments accessible without the cost or installation complexity of traditional desktop CAT tools. Unlike desktop CAT tools such as Trados Studio or memoQ, MateCat runs entirely in the browser with no installation required, enabling translators to work from any device while automatically leveraging cloud-based translation memories, MT engines, and quality estimation models. The integrated machine translation quality estimation (MTQE) feature scores each MT suggestion before the translator reviews it, allowing translators to confidently accept high-quality suggestions and focus editing effort on lower-quality segments. MateCat's open-source codebase has been adopted and extended by numerous LSPs and enterprises that deploy private instances integrated with their own MT and TM infrastructure. With millions of translation segments processed through the platform, MateCat represents one of the most significant open contributions to localization tooling.
