Alphabet is the holding company created in 2015 to own Google, which was founded in 1998. Through Google it operates some of the most widely used language technology in the world: Google Translate, the Cloud Translation and Speech-to-Text APIs, and the Gemini family of multilingual large language models, which increasingly handle translation, dubbing and captioning inside YouTube, Workspace and Android. Google's research teams have produced foundational work in neural machine translation, including the Transformer architecture that underpins today's LLMs. For language service providers, Alphabet is both a supplier of the engines they build on and a competitor whose free, embedded translation sets customer expectations on cost and speed.
