Modulate, a Boston-based startup specializing in voice AI and deepfake detection, has announced a successful funding round, raising USD 25 million. This latest influx of capital was led by Future Ventures and includes returning participants such as Hyperplane and Lakestar, the latter of which led Modulate’s USD 30 million Series A round back in August 2022. The new funding brings Modulate's total raised capital to USD 60 million as they continue to advance their technologies in voice analysis and security solutions — a vital need in the current era of digital communication evolution, as noted by Slator.

Modulate’s CEO and Co-Founder, Carter Huffman, highlights the challenges facing enterprises as AI technology becomes increasingly adept at generating speech. While AI-generated voices can pose legitimate and assistive uses, they can also be manipulated for malicious purposes. This dual nature emphasizes the importance of developing robust safeguards, a core focus of Modulate's ongoing work. Huffman explains the need for "guardrails" that function in real time, synthesizing multiple signals to explain alerts and empower users to make informed decisions. The company's Velma’s Ensemble Listening Model (ELM) architecture plays a crucial role in this effort, with its 100 specialized audio models designed to ensure nuanced and accurate voice analytics.

Supporting conversations across 50 languages, Modulate aims to embed audio-native understanding as a foundational layer within the AI ecosystem. This approach seeks to enhance communication beyond the limited scope of traditional speech-to-text translations. Huffman underscores this by pointing out that verbal content constitutes only about 7% of the true essence of spoken exchanges, a sentiment echoed by Chloe Duckworth of Valence AI. This highlights the broader contextual and emotional complexities that Modulate intends to capture and analyze through its innovative technologies.

The applications for Modulate's advancements extend across various sectors, including fraud prevention, financial services, healthcare, and customer experience management. By equipping enterprises with tools to better decipher and respond to the subtleties of human communication, Modulate positions itself at the forefront of transforming AI's role in conversational environments. Their ongoing focus on developing solutions that integrate with existing systems aims to mitigate risks and enhance the reliability of voice interactions, ensuring that both opportunities for assistive technologies and threats from synthetic voices are effectively managed.
