Cartesia Launches Sonic-3.6 TTS Model, Elevating Natural Speech
Cartesia has announced the release of its latest text-to-speech (TTS) system, Sonic-3.6. This new model marks a significant leap forward from its predecessor, the Sonic-3.5, in terms of supported languages and speech naturalness. Launched in beta on August 17, 2026, Sonic-3.6 expands its linguistic repertoire to 44 languages, up from the previous 42. This expansion underscores Cartesia's commitment to broadening its TTS capabilities to meet growing demands for localization in a global market.
Central to the development of Sonic-3.6 was feedback from developers, which drove advancements in creating speech that more closely mimics human conversation. To achieve this, Cartesia focused on enhancing the naturalness of its models by refining pacing, intonation, pronunciation, and the ability to handle conversational speech dynamics - refers Slator in a recent article. The model is adept at adjusting for context, seamlessly incorporating pauses and intonation shifts in the presence of disfluencies like "uhm" and "hmm." Remarkably, these modifications eliminate the need for additional tools such as Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) tags, streamlining the synthesis process.
In addition to technical improvements, Cartesia continues to capture substantial financial backing. The company garnered USD 27 million in a seed round in December 2024, followed by USD 64 million in Series A in March 2025. These funding milestones highlight investor confidence in Cartesia's innovative trajectory within the TTS and broader AI speech space. However, the competition remains intense, with firms like ElevenLabs securing USD 500 million in early 2026, solidifying a striking valuation of USD 11 billion. Meanwhile, Wispr's USD 280 million raise in its Series B round further illustrates the dynamic investments flooding into AI-driven speech technology.
The ascent of Sonic-3.6, culminating in its top ranking on the Artificial Analysis TTS model quality leaderboard just two days post-launch, signals Cartesia's prowess in the TTS landscape. With a robust portfolio that includes the Sonic suite of TTS models, Ink speech-to-text models, and diverse voice agents tailored for enterprise applications, Cartesia is cementing its status as a formidable force in AI voice solutions, driving innovations that elevate user interactions to new levels of fluidity and realism.
